Located in Doha, Hamad International Airport serves as the primary international gateway to the State of Qatar. Inaugurated in 2014, it is one of the most modern and technologically advanced airports in the world. Boasting a wide range of amenities and services, the airport is known for its iconic architecture, luxury shopping, and unique passenger experiences. The roof system is over 3,300,000 sf (310,000 m2) of convex, concave, and smooth curved roofing panels.
Many challenges presented themselves when looking for the right roofing product for the Hamad International Airport terminal building. The Hamad project is built on reclaimed land from the Arabian Gulf. Considering the region has a highly corrosive environment (surrounded by saltwater, high humidity climate, cannot rely on freshwater rinse in the form of rain), and has extreme temperatures regularly exceeding 122F (50C), the material selection for this airport was an authentic challenge.
In concert with the experts at Contraria Metal Resources, Bemo USA studied the atmospheric, geographic, and aesthetic conditions. After extensive metallurgical testing, a duplex stainless steel material (initially designed for North Sea Oil Platforms) was the specialty steel for this hostile environment. The result was a 20% harder type of stainless steel, challenging roll-forming the BEMO roof panel. The custom stainless steel alloy was coated with a specialty low gloss finish.
Bemo engineered and built specialized hardened tooling, custom curving dies, and high tensile seaming equipment to meet the demanding contours of the design. The result is a low-gloss, high-performance, highly corrosion-resistant panel system that is smooth-curved and will provide at least 50 years of service life for this facility.
